Ephemeral Thoughts: A Critique of Libertarianism

My chief criticism with libertarianism is that taking the gov't out of the mix is a recipe for allowing the strongest to victimize the weakest. This is a problem with our current gov't structure, but it would be ten times worse if Libertarians ran the country.

I think where I'm libertarian is in those areas where the government just shouldn't be involved. (And I definitely know that "where the government shouldn't be involved" is opinion.)

I'm realizing, perhaps, that I'm deeply liberal in the classical sense. I think that I agree with Maher in that we haven't had a liberal party in charge for some years now.

I know that there are a lot of "I thinks" in that, but I'm keeping an open mind and learning as I go. :)

Then maybe the best label you could use for yourself is Independent, Free Thinker, Non-Affiliated or something of that nature. In truth, the labels are simply that -- labels. I've known many arch conservatives who possess a truly liberal or even radical left perspective on one or two issues. I've also known liberals who view one or more issues in a most conservative manner. These schools of thought -- the labels -- are often too fixed to truly describe any given individual's overall political perspective.

I'm actually registered as an Independent. :) My hubby and I are feeling like we made a huge mistake in voting for Obama (even though our not voting would not have changed anything). I find myself hoping Kucinich runs again. On the other hand, I could be mistaken there too.
